Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major awards ceremony approaches, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
