Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
