The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
