Defense Department Report Concludes Hegseth Put Military Personnel in Danger with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon report has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by disclosing secret intelligence in a private Signal group, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Incident

The online conversation in dispute contained details about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the group allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not approved for handling sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Troops

The internal investigation determined that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the lives of US troops if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he shared, though it was not specified whether he actually exercised that authority.

Secretary's Reaction

The source said that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed details that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the mission. He added that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and viewed the investigation to be partisan.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been provided to lawmakers. An unclassified version is anticipated to be made public in the coming days.
